Residents unravel 'done deal'

PNJ.com / March 29, 2009

By the time Jean Foster and her husband heard about the bingo-casino planned for Perdido Key, it was too late.

"We were told it was a done deal," she said, recalling that day in February when she learned of the project.

Like many other property owners on Perdido Key, Foster began making phone calls, searching for answers, hoping to find others who felt the way she did.

It wasn't long before the Perdido Presidents Forum rode to the rescue... MORE

Arcade Gambling Moratorium
WEARTV.com

Escambia County Commissioners want to tighten regulations on gambling.

They've passed a moratorium on so called arcade gambling.

Channel Three's Dan Thomas joins us now with our third top story.

Dan what prompted this moratorium?

As you know, gambling has been steadily expanding in Escambia County over the last year. Several new bingo halls have popped up, and there's a card room at the dog track.

But that expansion met it's first credible resistance when plans were announced to put a bingo casino on Perdido Key.

This much is clear, gambling is legal in Florida, but exactly what type of gambling and where you can gamble is up for interpretation.

That's why plans for an electronic bingo hall on Perdido Key confused and astonished many local residents.

Ed McMillan/Perdido Key Resident: "I think the confusion and this is a situation where most of us had never been in a bingo parlor 2 months ago."

Eddie McMillan/Perdido Resident: "The problem in Florida is the laws are so vague with regard to machines that there's always a problem getting these enforced."

Eddie McMillan is leading a group that is appealing the zoning for that bingo hall.

They expect a decision from the county in the next couple of weeks.

But while they fight plans for gambling on their island.

Ed McMillan/Perdido Key Resident: "We would like to see a moratorium."

They asked for and got the county commission to put a stop to any possible expansion of arcade gambling.

It won't affect the current plans for a bingo hall on Perdido Key, but it would stop any others from popping up.
